Bride of Christ – A love story
Bride of Christ – A Love story is a unique documentary about the life and love of young women who choose to live inside a Carmelite monastery forever.
The Carmelite rule is the strictest within the Catholic Church and the girls who decide to become Carmelite nuns live cloistered behind the monastery’s grille all their life in silence, poverty and solitude from the outside world.
After years of communication Rakel Garðarsdóttir and Ágústa M. Ólafsdóttir were granted unique access to film inside the Carmelite monastery in Iceland and document the live of the nuns for a year.
The main character of the documentary is called Miriam.
She joined the Carmelite monastery at the age of 22 after completing a university mathematics degree in Poland.
She has lived inside the monastery for 21 years and never questioned her love for god – but has she ever doubted her decision to live cloistered forever?
We follow Miriam and her 12 Carmelite sisters for a period of one year and try to find out who they really are, what drives them and get to know their everyday life.
Bride of Christ gives a remarkable insight into a closed community that follows it’s own laws and traditions. Life hasn’t changed much inside the monastery for decades and the modern materialistic world is unknown there.
Bride of Christ received a grant from the Icelandic film center 2013.
Bride of Christ is currently being filmed.
