Vesturport awarded the Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities XII

The Vesturport theatre company was recently awarded the European Theatre Prize, New Theatrical Realities;  “for its complete work, its innovative character and originality”.
The award ceremony will take place in Russia, in St. Petersburg from 13th  to 17th April 2011 where 600 to 700 theatre professionals, journalists and critics are expected from all over the world.
The Prize events will take place under the support and patronage of the Russian Government with its Ministry of Culture and the Government of the City of St. Petersburg. Furthermore, the “Fund Baltic International Festival Center” commits itself to host, finance and organize the events of Europe Theatre Prize in St. Petersburg.
The Union of European Theatres is an associate and supporting body of Europe Theatre Prize, while the International Association of Theatre Critics, the Instituto Internacional del Teatro del Mediterraneo, the International Theatre Institute UNESCO and the European Festivals Association are associate bodies.
The Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities is aimed at encouraging emerging trends and initiatives in European drama, considered in all its different forms, articulations and expressions.
“The Icelandic theatre company Vesturport is not widely known, but for the last 10 years, it has been packing out houses across the world with high-octane productions of Romeo + Juliette, Metamorphosis and Woyzeck.
Now its innovative approach has been rewarded with one of the most prestigious accolades in theatre, The European Theatre Prize, which has been won by such luminaries as Peter Brook, Pina Bausch, Robert Lepage and Harold Pinter. The company will receive the award at a ceremony next April.”
